Roads Scholarship Spotlight

01 SEP 2020

Congratulations Roads Scholarship Recipients!

Plans for graduation and award ceremonies and celebrations have been curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, the OAPC Roads Scholarship program continues to award $1,000 scholarships to students who demonstrate exemplary leadership within their respective programs and who express an interest in the asphalt paving industry. Scholarship recipients are selected by our partner colleges which include Algonquin, Canadore, Centennial, Conestoga, Georgian and Fleming Colleges.

Congratulations Roads Scholarship Recipients!

Scott Wood, Centennial College. Scott will be going into his final year of the Heavy Duty Equipment - Motive Power Technician program.

Sandi Graca, Conestoga College. Sandi will be going into her final year of the Motive Power, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician program.

“I live in Cambridge, Ontario and I plan to be a field service technician, which I am sure will include road construction. I love that it's always different, no one issue is ever the exact same as another. The different aspects of the work are what I am really looking forward to. The scholarship has definitely helped. Not having to stress about money and just focus on school work has taken a weight off of my shoulders, and I am so grateful for that.”

Chance McFarlane, Conestoga College. Chance will be going into his final year of the Heavy Construction Equipment Operator (HCEO) program.
“Receiving this scholarship looks great on my resume and it is a real blessing for my family and our new baby.”

Michael McCallan, Canadore College. Michael will be going into his final year of the Welder-Fitter program.

Jeffrey Kalinovich, Fleming College. The Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council Roads Scholarship Award for Academic Achievement.

As a married father of three, my career change has been quite a ride, with no regrets. I’ve had a wide array of tasks on the job from engine and transmission replacement and reseals, to preventative maintenance services and plenty in between. I can thank the faculty at Fleming College’s Frost campus for providing a strong foundation to build a successful career on, and get a good start in a shop with valuable mentorship. A national dealership no less, Brandt Tractor! As anyone in the industry can attest to, training and tools cost plenty of money. My most recent air tool purchase after receiving this award was the Snap-On PTR72 air ratchet. A welcome improvement over my old, tired hand-me-down version; it is more powerful, faster, and even quieter. The Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council Roads Scholarship Award for Academic Achievement has helped in a big way, from buying needed tools, to taking care of some of the student loan. So, thank you very much! Your assistance has made a difference.
